FAQs

Are you qualified?
Yes, I have a Diploma in Counselling, and an MA in Core Process Psychotherapy. I am in regular supervision and am registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy.

What happens when I contact you?
This is likely to be by e-mail or telephone. You may have questions you want to ask, or you may be happy to arrange to meet with me for an introductory free half hour, in order to decide whether I am the right person to work with.

Do you offer an introductory session?
Yes, I offer an introductory session of half an hour. This will give us the opportunity to talk through the possibility of working together. There is no charge. It is an opportunity for you to ask me questions, to tell me a little about yourself, and what brings you to be looking for counselling or psychotherapy.

How quickly can I see you?
I will want to offer you an introductory appointment within the week. Occasionally if you are limited as to when you are available this might be a little longer.

Can I park nearby?
There is parking nearby in Pinhoe, and a five minute walk away in Gandy St.

How do I start counselling or psychotherapy?
If you decide that you want to work with me, we will need to check that we can find a mutually acceptable time. It is almost invariably best to meet weekly, however I am also open to discussion around this.

How long will the therapy last?
This will depend on your own needs, and on how far down a path of personal awareness you wish to go. We can discuss how the therapy is going and consider when it is time to stop.

How much does it cost?
The sessions last for one hour each, and cost £35. Usually I suggest six initial weekly sessions. That will give us an opportunity to work together and to make a decision about further sessions.

How do I know whom to chose?
I usually suggest that you see two or three psychotherapists or counsellors before you make a decision. You are making an important choice. You will want to find someone with whom you feel comfortable, this can depend on the person as well as the type of therapy they practice.

When will sessions be?
It will be important to arrange a regular weekly time for your sessions. I work from Monday to Friday, and most of my space is in the daytime.

Do you charge for missed sessions?
If you cancel a session within 24 hours, you will need to pay the full rate. I do not charge for earlier cancellations.

What if I am not happy with the service you provide?
Firstly, I hope you feel able to talk to me about any concerns that you have. This can sometimes be an important part of the work. If you continue to be unhappy about the service, of course you can discontinue psychotherapy, and/or you can contact my training organisation, the Karuna Institute. I work to a code of professional ethics, which you are welcome to see at any time.

Are the sessions confidential?
Yes, what you say will not be repeated anywhere else apart from two instances. For the benefit of the people who work with me I have regular supervision, but people are not identified by name. If I thought that you or anybody else was at risk I would discuss with you the possibility of finding additional help. I would only consider breaking confidentiality if this was unsuccessful for some reason. This would be for the benefit of your well-being and the well-being of others.
