Shock and trauma

Many of us have had experiences that have shocked us. In some situations we feel supported and in touch with our resources. When this
is the case the aftermath of the shock is minimised, we have not become overwhelmed.
However with other experiences the incident has overwhelmed our resources. When this happens we can feel traumatised. We split our responses to the experience, we may remember aspects of the experience very clearly, for example, the sounds, or certain visual impacts. At the same time we may not be able to remember what we felt or did.
Often this does not have a lasting effect, we learn to integrate the experience. Sometimes we are left with effects relating to the trauma
and may choose to seek professional help. Here we will be supported in integrating the experience, gathering our fragmented awareness in a
way that does not overwhelm us. We can then feel resourced and in
touch with ourselves, whilst recognising and visiting the shocked place.
The completion needs to be done very very gently. It is as if the therapist has the map, and the client knows, at some level, the way they need to
go on that map. The therapist travels carefully with the client, alongside, and ensuring the client does not become overwhelmed.
